A Rice Farmer, Mr. Richard Olafare says Osun state has the capacity to grow enough rice to feed the entire South-West region of the country.
Mr. Olafare who stated this at a farmers’ meeting at Onilapa Farm in Ola-Oluwa Local Government Area of the state said this could only be achieved if the Government provided adequate support.
Mr. Olafare canvassed effective management and exploration of its complete value-chain to increase rice production in the state.
He noted that Osun State has about 60 percent of the most productive rice seedlings that can be found in the country, but lamented that farmers were yet to fully harness it.
Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola said it had become imperative for all to do the needful in promoting agriculture, saying his administrator was ready to support and collaborate with any individual or group interested in farming.
Mr. Aregbesola noted that Nigerians must begin to produce what they consume so as not to remain dependent.
While expressing the readiness to advance mechanized farming in the state, Governor Aregbesola said efforts would be geared towards meeting the state’s objectives in the agriculture sector.
