Association of cattle rearers in Osun State popularly called “Miyeti Allah” wants government at all levels to consider grazing reserve as a measure to eradicate farmers-herdsmen clashes.
The association said this would replicate farm settlements as they have been graciously allocated to farmers for cultivation over the years.
Representatives of the herdsmen, Mr Sulaiman Hussein made the suggestion at a periodic joint meeting of farmers/herdsmen with the Osun State Police Command.
He said farmers would also prefer their request to get grazing reserve from Government to cater for their cattle.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olafimihan Adeoye suggested that herdsmen should identify areas where there are no farmlands for grazing as a short time solution.
Mr. Adeoye also enjoined the herdsmen to desist from allowing their underage children rear cattle, saying it is against the Child’s Right Act.
He explained that the police believed in enlightening the public before the enforcement of the law, even though there is no ignorance in law.
The farmers and herdsmen at the meeting pledged commitment towards sustaining the peaceful coexistence already being enjoyed between them in the state.
