Government at all levels and development partners have been urged to provide improved social and economic support for women as part of efforts to reduce violence in the home front.
The Provost, Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Dr Timothy Adebowale made the call in Abeokuta, while delivering a paper on Domestic Violence and Societal Challenges for Women, as part of activities marking this year’s week of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ.
Dr Adebowale identified low level education, anti- social personality disorder, drug abuse, and keeping of multiple partners as some of the factors causing domestic violence.
The mental Health expert, who explained that children were mostly affected by violence in marriages, stressed the need for victims to always notify relevant authorities.
He called on couples to engage in effective communication to curb the increasing rate of domestic violence in the country.
