Failure of parents to consider economic implication of raising too many children have been identified as a major factor responsible for poverty rate and crises in the family.

A professor of economics at the University of Ibadan, Olanrewaju Olaniyan stated this while delivering an inaugural lecture titled “Mothers and Fathers: the Peculiar and Awkward Economics of the Family”.

Professor Olaniyan lamented the growing rate of single parents in Nigeria, noting that failure of parents to invest and remain united amidst daunting economic challenges would end the family in disarray.

He said husbands and wives must render supportive roles and eschew selfishness for the family to grow and develop.

Participants at the lecture, including the wife of Professor Olaniyan, Adefunke of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, described the lecture as timely in view of the crises facing different homes.
