Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has bid the state’s contingent to the fourth National Youth Games in Ilorin farewell.
Addressing the athletes and their coaches at Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta, Governor Amosun urged the athletes to be ambassador of the state through the exhibition of sportsmanship.
Represented by the state’s Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Mr Afolabi Afuape, the governor said the state’s participation was not to win laurel but expose and discover talents that would replaced the ageing athletes.
Governor Amosun, who noted that the essence of the youth games was to discover talents for the country condemned the win at all cost syndrome by some states.
He gave the assurance that the welfare of the contingents was paramount to the government, announcing that there would be an instant awards to athletes who distinguished themselves in the competition.
The Director of Sports, Ogun State Sports Council, Mr Adesola Faleti reaffirmed the readiness of the athletes to win laurels for the state.
About one hundred and seventy athletes would represent the state at the annual event billed for University of Ilorin.
The state finished fifth in the last edition of the youth games.
