Government and private media organizations have been urged to give priority to the welfare of journalists as a way of motivating them in the discharge of their duty.

Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State Council, Comrade Adewumi Faniran, made the call at the 50th anniversary of Oyo Press Centre  and 2018 Press Week held at Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

Comrade Faniran, who described journalists as the eyes of the society, noted that with the right incentives, members of the fourth estate of the realm would be able to play their role in the democratic life of the Nigerian society.

In an address, National President, NUJ, Mr. Chris Isiguzo, congratulated NUJ  Oyo State Council for its laudable achievement over the years.

Represented by Vice President, Zone B, Mr. Cosmos Oni, Mr. Isiguzo, appreciated journalists in Nigeria for electing him as their leader.

In their goodwill messages, Royal Father of the Day, His Imperial Majesty, Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, represented by Agba Akin Olubadan, Oloye Lekan Balogun, called on the media to help promote cultural heritage; Zonal Director, FRCN, Ibadan National Station, Alhaji Mohammed Bello, admonished journalists to always stick to the ethics of the profession; while Fresh FM Proprietor, Mr. Yinka Ayefele , represented by Head of News, Mr. Samson Akindele, used the occasion to appreciate the role played by journalists during Fresh FM demolition saga.

The event was declared open by Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, represented by Special Adviser Media, Mr. Bolaji Tunji.

Highlight of the programme was presentation of award of recognition to some personalities including Governor Abiola Ajimobi; Founder, Christ Apostolic Church, C.A.C Reformation Land, Olunloyo, Ibadan, Prophet Timothy Arabambi; Oyo NURTW Acting Chairman, Mr. Abideen Olajide; Fresh FM Proprietor, Yinka Ayefele and Zonal Director, FRCN Ibadan National Station, Alhaji Mohammed Bello.




The event continues tomorrow with a ‘Work For Life’ .

Oyo NUJ’s 50th anniversary, which started on Sunday October 7 ,  ends on Friday, October 12. The theme of the event is Journalism in Democratic Dispensation: Roles, Expectations and Challenges.
