Oyo Government Commences Deworming of School-age Children

Teacher (knock on the door): I came to ask why Sunday has not been to school for the past 3 days

Sunday’s mother: Sunday is having diarrhoea and stomach ache. The doctor said, he is suffering from worms. I don’t even have money to buy deworming tablets for him.

Teacher: Have you not heard? The government of Oyo state is deworming all school –age children from the age of 5-14 years old on Tuesday, October 23rd 2018 in all public, private, junior secondary and primary schools free-of-charge. Teachers have been trained to administer these tablets. Out-of-school children can visit any of the schools near them for deworming. It does no matter if the children have worms or not. Those who cannot get the tablet on this day can get it on Thursday, Oct 25, 2018.

Sunday’s mother: Why will teachers give these tablets to children and not health workers?

Teacher:  Teachers and not health workers will be the ones to give these deworming tablets to children on school deworming day because the tablets are very safe and easy to administer. Each eligible child will take just a single deworming tablet. Children who are sick on deworming day and those with known illnesses will not be given deworming tablets. Again there are far more children requiring deworming than health workers can handle.

Narrator: To prevent worms. Do not defecate in the open. Always use a toilet. Wash your hands with soap, especially before eating and after using the toilet.  Keep food covered. Keep your surroundings clean. Keep nails clean and short. Always wear shoes or slippers and avoid swimming in unclean water bodies.

Remember, deworming is free-of-charge!!!
