An attempt by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service to evacuate a military truck suspected to have been smuggled into a border community in Ogun State has resulted in the death of a man.
Some residents of the community who spoke with newsmen claimed that the victim was on his way to the farm when he was shot dead by Customs officers who had stormed the area in search of suspected smugglers.
The residents alleged that the suspected smugglers had fled the community before the arrival of the customs operatives and advocated the need for urgent measures to check incessant clashes and loss of lives during Customs operations in the area.
Reacting, the Customs Public Relations Officer, Ogun Area Command, Mr Abdullahi Maiwada said suspected hoodlums had attacked operatives of the command with stones and other dangerous weapons at Ebute Community along Ilaro-Oja-Odan road.
Mr Maiwada said the Customs operatives had to resist and called for reinforcement to enable them evacuate the military truck in view of the implication to national security while the deceased was shot during the encounter.
The Customs Spokesman explained that the situation was brought under control with the efforts of other relevant security agencies, traditional rulers, eminent individuals and members of the communities.
