Over five thousand athletes from within and outside the shore of country are expected to participate at the maiden edition of Abeokuta ten kilometers race.
Addressing journalists in Abeokuta, the initiator and former Commissioner of Youths and Sports, Mr Bukola Olopade said sports had become strong tool for empowerment, hence the need for the competition.
Mr Olopade, who explained that race had been licensed by the International Association of Athletics Federations, IAAF, said the race would be all comers’ affairs.
He announced that five, three and two thousand dollars as price for the elites while first, second and third Nigerians to cross the line would also be rewarded.
Mr Olopade also used the occasion to advocate the continued support of private sectors to assist the physically challenged athletes towards motivating them to deliver for the country.
In a message, the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s determination to support and partner individuals or groups in efforts towards the development of sports in the state.
Speaking of the technical area, Mr Seyi Johnson said the routes for the race and security arrangements had been put in place to ensure a hitch free race.
In their separate submissions, Mr Ademola Adewunmi and Wale Ayilara said the race would not only foster relationship but also attract investors to state especially in the tourism sector.
