A football competition for under ten boys and under sixteen girls has been organised in memory of the premier of the defunct Western Region , late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The competition, which was in partnership with the National Youth Soccer Association, was to appreciate the role played by Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the development of youths and the construction of Liberty Stadium Ibadan.

The competition, according to the organizer, was also to immortalise the wife of the late sage.

The Executive Director of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu said this at the presentation of trophies for the competition in Ikenne.

She explained that the competition would spur the imagination of Nigerian youths about the immense possibilities for their individual and collective progress when they understand the leadership model of the likes of Chief Awolowo.

Also speaking, Secretary Youth Soccer Association, Mr. Aliu Ganiyu, said sixteen teams of  boys and girls categories took part in the competition.

The participating teams were drawn from various football academies in both Lagos and Ogun State.

The football competition was part of this year’s  annual Obafemi Awolowo Memorial Lecture Series, a programme lined up to celebrate the life and time of the former premier of the Western Region.
