Good governance has been described as an important tool for growth and national development towards achieving a viral nation.
This was the consensus of participants at a day capacity building workshop for journalists in Oyo State on good governance reporting entitled, ‘The Development Journalism Perspective’ held at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The programme, which was sponsored by a politician and a philanthropist, Engineer Seyi Makinde, in partnership with the NUJ Oyo State Council was attended by journalists drawn from various chapels of the union.
Declaring the workshop open, the sponsor, Engineer Seyi Makinde noted that lack of good governance was responsible for the lack of purposeful leadership hindering national development.
Delivering the lead paper titled ‘Good Governance, Practice Indicators’ ,Acting Director General, DAWN Commission, Mr Seye Oyeleye, said good governance was about making good decisions and proper implementation of developmental policies for the benefit of the masses.
Mr. Oyeleye said this should be the focal point for any leader.
Also, two other speakers, Mr Tunde Adeleke and Mr Segun Balogun emphasised that, without good governance, corruption and other administrative decadence would continue to draw the nation backward .
Earlier in an address of welcome, Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, Mr Adewumi Faniran noted that,every nation needs good governance from its leaders to fast track its development.
Mr Faniran enjoined journalists to do away with damaging, sentimental,and sycophantic reporting, but should engage more in development journalism to chart part for national development.
The NUJ chairman appreciated the facilitator,Mr Segun Balogun and the sponsor,Engineer Seyi Makinde for keying into the vision of administration on the resolve to ensuring capacity building and professionalism for journalists in the state.
