Oyo state Government has commenced the demolition of 200 dilapidated school blocks across the state.
According to the government, the structures were constructed in the 1950s with mud bricks and could no longer stand the test of time due to structural problems.
Supervising the demolition of a block of classrooms at Ibadan Municipal Government School 1, Mokola, Ibadan, Commissioner for Education, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, stated that Oyo State Government had set aside five point six billion naira (#5.6b) to construct new buildings, apart from Model Schools.
He explained that two billion naira had been awarded for the construction of one hundred buildings in various secondary schools while three point five billion has been set aside for primary schools structures.
Professor Olowofela added that the demolition exercise, which would last for four weeks, would dislodge hoodlums and mentally deranged persons from government classrooms.
