Ogun to Check Use of Mercenaries in Sports

As part of efforts to develop grassroots sports, the Ogun State Government has advocated a legislation to proscribe the use of mercenaries during competitions.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Afolabi Afuape made the submission while interacting with Sports Journalist in Abeokuta, the state Capital.

Mr. Afuape who lamented that the trend had deprived many of talents, maintained that the resources used to employ the services of foreign athletes as marcineries could be channeled towards raising and nurturing new talents to stardom.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports said the present administration had commenced the process of reviving tertiary institutions’ games as well as organise mini sports festival to develop the grassroots.

Mr Afuape who noted that the ministry would welcome ideas that would assist sports development in the state said efforts would be intensified to ensure that gateway united football team qualified for professional league next season.

He also told journalists that arrangement had been concluded for the upgrade of facilities at MKO and Musa Lawal Stadia to attract national competitions.
