Police in Ogun State has rescued a 12-day old baby allegedly dumped into the latrine by her mother.
The 21 year old mother who has been apprehended at Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of the state was reported to have confessed to the crime, claiming that the father of her baby was not taking care of her and the child.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi who made this known to Newsmen in Abeokuta said the suspect’s Landlord had reported at the police station that the tenants heard the cries of a baby inside the pit of the building’s toilet.
Mr Oyeyemi explained that a team of police personnel led by the Ilaro Divisional Police Officer, Opebiyi Sunday rushed to the scene where they had to break the latrine to retrieve the baby.
The suspect allegedly told the police that she decided to do away with the infant because she was an orphan and the child’s father, Taiwo Owolabi who was married to another woman with five children had not been responsible for the baby’s up-keep.
The PPRO pointed out that the said husband had also been arrested, while the baby was given necessary medical attention and moved to the State’s Motherless Babies home in Abeokuta.
He explained that the case had been transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department on the order of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmed Iliyasu for further investigation and possible prosecution of the suspects.
