Acting Head of Department, History and Diplomatic Studies, Kola Daisi University, Ibadan, Dr Sekinat Kola-Aderoju has advocated the change of June 12 “Democracy Day” to MKO Abiola Day” as this will serve as a monumental immortalization of the man.
She made the call in Ibadan while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the National recognition of June 12 as democracy day.
Dr Kola-Aderoju said, making the day ” MKO Abiola Day” would make even unborn generations to appreciate the sacrifice of the martyr, stressing that such happened in other climes as a form of remembering heroes like Columbus Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day in USA as well as Mandela Day in South Africa.
Similarly, deputy governorship candidate of Action Democratic Party in Oyo State in the last election, Professor Abideen Olaiya, said considering the supreme price paid by Chief MKO Abiola for democracy, immortalizing his name, by adding him to the heroes in the nation’s currency would not be too much.
However, former Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr Minkail Alarape said reformation of the electoral process in enhancing free and fair election devoid of massive litigation was the best way to immortalize MKO Abiola and the June 12.
They all believed that the recognition of June 12 had transformed the day from a sectional celebration to National honor.
