Area Comptroller of Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Command, Mr Zilkifilu Abdullahi, has called for meaningful development in border towns across the country to curb community’s involvement in smuggling.
Mr Abdulahi made the call when he hosted the Speaker of the Oyo state House of Assembly, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin who led his colleagues on a familiarization visit to the command.
The NCS boss explained that neglect of border communities on developmental and industrial projects by the government has forced many residents to engage in smuggling to make ends meet.
He appealed to the lawmakers to support the agency by enlightening the residents on the dangers involved in illegal importations.
On the ban on importation of some goods, Mr Abdullahi said it was in the interest of the citizens as many of the items were expired before importation and injurious to human health.
Earlier, Speaker of the House, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin who said the visit was to create synergy with Nigerian Customs to achieve governmental goals in area of security and border protection, promised an enabling environment for customs to operate in Oyo state.
The visit was in continuation of familiarization tour of security agencies in Oyo state.
